A Meeting of the Members to Ratify the Committee’s Action — Extensive Repairs to be Made.
“Yesterday a very important purchase of property was made, being the purchase of the club house of the Republican league by its members, the consideration being $25,000. Dr. Winchell, who held the property on a mortgage, and Thomas R. Trowbridge, the president of the league, signed the agreements, and Dr. Winchell will convey to the club a clean title of the property (which was formerly occupied as a family residence by Marshal Carll, and previous to that by the late Gaius F. Warner, and which is situated in front of the Hyperion Theater) as soon as the members hold a meeting and ratify the action of the committee in making the purchase. It is intended to make repairs on the property to the extent of $5,000, which will begin to be made early in the fall. To pay the whole amount in cash the club will issue $30,000 in $200 bonds bearing 5 per cent interest, secured by mortgages on the property. These bonds will not be floated on the market, but sold exclusively to the members of the league.
A good share of them have already been subscribed for. The building has a frontage on Chapel street of fifty feet, with a depth of 113 feet.”
